Prof. Dr. Afat SERJANI
In Albania, due to its geological position and neotectonic movements there are evidenced special geological phenomena, which testify to the history of crustal evolution, and tectonic plate collision, in this part of the Earth. In many cases they represent geological sites of local, national, and regional importance. Superimposed there are rare, beautiful and aesthetic natural landscapes.
Geological heritage conservation and geological sites of Albania were presented for the first time in the framework of ProGEO Strategy in Sofia, Bulgaria, on May, 1995 (Serjani & Cara, 1996, Serjani, 1996). Later, geological sites of Albania were presented in ProGEO international meetings in Tallinn (Serjani, Neziraj, Jozja, 1997), in Belogradchik, Bulgaria (Serjani, Neziraj, Jozja, 1998), at the third International Symposium in Madrid (Serjani, etc., 1999), in Prague (Serjani, Neziraj, 2000), in Athens (Serjani, Neziraj, Hallaēi, 2001), in Ankara (2002), in Dublin (Serjani, Neziraj, Hallaēi, 2002), in Romania (2003), in Belgrade (Serjani, A., et al., 2004) and at the IGC in Florence (Serjani, A., 2004), in Tirana (2005), in Sarajevo and Kiev (2006).
At the end of 1997 Union of Albanian Geologists for the Geological Science Heritage (ProGEO Albania) was founded as an NGO.
Since 1998 by Geological Research Institute there are compiled some important studies on geological heritage and geotourism, supported by Albanian Geological Survey:
Geological Heritage Conservation in Albania (1999). In the second volume of this study for the first time was compiled Inventory of Geological sites of Albania, where were defined and described 340 geological sites.
The Map of geological sites of Albania in scale 1:500 000 (2001)
Selection of geological sites compiling Regional and National lists (2006). |
In framework of ProGEO Strategy some important studies are compiled by ProGEO-Albania members such as:
Compilation of the list of geological sites of regional importance (Balkan, European and Global geosites) included in regional list for SE Europe and presented for the first time in Dublin (2002), and in complete form later, in Belgrade (2004).
Tirana International Symposium: Ten Years Geological Heritage Conservation in SE Europe, held on May 12-17, 2005.
The book: Geological Heritage and Geotourism in Albania (by Serjani A., Neziraj A., etc.) in both English and Albanian versions (2003).
Geo-tourist Map of Albania by Serjani A., Avxhiu A., in English verison (2003). |
Last years was done the study on natural monuments of Albania by Ministry of Environment of Albania and Geographical Department of Tirana University (Qiriazi P. Sala S. etc., 2003)
In the first Inventory there are included the following genetical types:
Stratigraphical sites (16 geosites), Igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary petrology (16 geosites), Mineralogical-Economic (15 geosites), Tectonic-Structural (15 geosites),
Geomorphological features, and landscapes (250 sites), Continental or oceanic scale geological features, tectonic plates (2 geosites), Historic sites (7 geosites), Palaeoenvironmental (17 geosites), Palaeobiological sites (2 geosites), Astroproblems (1 geosite).
The most important legislation acts on natural monuments of Albania were:
Decree Nr. 4874 (23.091971), and the Law Nr. 4927, (24.02. 1971): The Protection of Cultural Monuments and Rare Natural Wealth. |
D.C.M. Nr. 413 (22. 08. 1994): For Proclamation of Karavasta Lagoon and Divjaka Forest Park as Natural Ecosystems |
Law Nr.8906, date 06.06.2002 on Protected Areas. |
D.C.M. Nr. 676 (20.12. 2002): For the Proclamation of Protected Areas of Albanian Natural Monuments. |
The Decision of Council of Ministers Nr. 676 ( 20. 12. 2002): For Proclamation of Protected Areas of Albanian Nature Monuments defines protected areas for each district of Albania. In total, 669 localities are defined:
Forest areas and individual trees 315
Karstic caves 100 | |
Springs (thermal and mineral) 58
Glacial and karstic lakes, marshes and lagoons 28
Geosites of varied origins are 195. |
This list was compiled by Department of Nature Protection of Ministry of Environment .
